Mastering Gas Dispersion and Bulk Flow: The Rushton & Hydrofoil Synergy

When designing an industrial mixing tank, the magic happens when you combine different flow patterns. In this setup, we’re using a high-efficiency Top-Entry Hydrofoil Impeller paired with a Bottom-Mounted Rushton Turbine.

Why this specific combination?

1. Radial vs. Axial Flow
The Rushton Turbine at the bottom creates a powerful Radial Flow (pushing liquid outward toward the tank walls). This is the “gold standard” for high-shear applications and gas-liquid dispersion. Meanwhile, the Hydrofoil provides Axial Flow (pushing liquid downward), ensuring the entire volume stays in motion.

2. Efficient Gas Dispersion
If you are injecting gas (like air, CO2, or Oxygen) into the bottom of the tank, the Rushton turbine is designed to “break” the gas bubbles into tiny droplets, dramatically increasing the surface area for mass transfer. The Hydrofoil then pumps those bubbles back down, increasing their residence time in the liquid.

3. Handling High Solids Loading
The Rushton turbine provides the high shear needed to break up solids or agglomerates at the base, while the Hydrofoil prevents those solids from settling, maintaining a uniform suspension throughout the process.

4. Optimized Energy Consumption
By using a Hydrofoil for the bulk movement (pumping) and the Rushton only where high shear is needed, we achieve a high-quality mix with lower total energy consumption compared to using multiple high-shear blades.

Ideal for:
Fermentation & Bioreactors: Where oxygen transfer is critical.

Chemical Reactors: For gas-liquid reactions.

Waste Water Treatment: Efficient aeration and mixing.

Mining & Minerals: Keeping heavy slurries suspended.

Engineering the right flow pattern isn’t just about speed- it’s about the physics of the fluid.

How do you balance shear and flow in your mixing processes? Let’s discuss.
